Water Softener questions
I've never owned a house with softener system until now.It was probably original to the house and over 20 years old. We recently discovered that for past year that we've owned this house the system probably was doing little. When we purchased the tank had no salt and I was unable to find any information on how to set it up so I added salt and stuck with old settings. It was cabinet style and apparently drastically undersized.
There are 2 people, 2 full baths, one with a oversized tub. We average 170-180 gallons/day. (85 per person)
The flow rate at the tub is 25 secs for 5 gallon bucket. 12 gallons per minute.
We have municipal water and they recommend starting at 18 and adjusting. Last years average hardness was 17. They do good job of treating water for everything else.
pH between 7 and 7.5
Iron= .095 ppb
sodium = 33 ppm
copper .8 ppm
chlorine 2 ppm
Depending on which calculator I use I get either 40 or 32k softener. The old one was 20k and they had 4 people here.
Does a 32k softener always use 1 cu ft of resin? Is that what determines the 32k size?
Is it better to use smaller system and regenerate more often based on metered amount used or use larger system and go longer between regenerations and set time to 7,8 or 9 days?
Thanks for help
