Water softener, poured salt in wrong place... I think

I just moved into my first home and I am not too familiar with using water softeners so as I was pouring the salt into the brine tank I had spilled a lot of it into this small tube looking thing (is it called a brine well?) that has this float device in it. Anyways I donít think there is supposed to be a lot of salt in there and was wondering if I needed to clean it out and how I should do that.

I'm not sure what kind of water softener I have but it looks like the Kenmore 300 Series Water Softener.

Also if you have any tips on maintaining a water softener that would be helpful.

I would let it ride for awhile.
While the cap is there too keep the salt out of that brine well, getting salt in there is not going to kill the softener.
Fresh water coming in the the salt tank will have to enter through that brine well and will be taking out that salt, so after a cycle or two that salt will be gone.
Post a photo and we will see if we can ID the system.
