Water smells like sulfur. Not sure water softener kicking on

How do I know if the softener is working? Should it be making noise?

There should be salt usage and you might hear water going to the drain when the system is in cleaning mode.

You might have a salt bridge.

A water softener will not remove sulfer smell. Sulfer smell is typically a result of hydrogen sulfide in the water and can be removed by oxidation or, at low levels, by a carbon filter.

Sulfer smell from hot water only is typically caused by a chemical reaction with the anode in the hot water heater and can be dealt with by using a different type of anode.

Maybe I missed something. I don't see any question about sulfur. I don't see where he says his softener is not working, either.

If your water is hard, the softener is not working. If your cold is soft and your hot is hard, then your softener is working some of the time.

I had read the title but didn't see any question about sulfur. Nor did I see where he thinks his softener is not working. He just to know if it is working so I based my response on his post.

I guess I should have said that softeners only make noise when water is running through them (or they have a noisy clock) during service, brining or backwash. But one cannot conclude it is working simply because it is making a noise. There are a lot of noisy softeners out there that don't work.

I suppose I should have asked to provide more info, as well, since his post is a little shy on details or stated problems. So the best answer to his question if the softener is working is to test the hot and cold water.

On the other hand, he goes out and buys a sulfide system and finds out it is coming from the water heater-- oops. Just spent a lot of money on something that didn't work.
