water smells Culligan water softener

I noticed that the water is my house was smelling bad so I went to check the water softener. I discovered that the brine tank contained no salt and that there was about 6-8 inches of "dirty" water in the brine tank. I filled it with 80lbs of salt and then hit regen on the control panel. It made noise like it was doing something but the water still smells bad. I don't know anything about water softeners. Should the brine tank be full of water or does water just filter through the salt? Any Help would be appreciated.

Most likely the softener will need another regeneration to get fully clean. After the cleaning is finished make sure that there is about 3 hours before you start another.

The water is treated by the media that is under the control valve , the salt is what is used to recharge the media so that it can treat X number of gallons.

Water in the brine tank can look like what you are dealing with.
