water problems

Sounds like high water pressure causing a water hammer. When you are running water upstairs and you shut it off it comes to an abrupt halt. The energy from the momentum in the water has to go somewhere. Sometimes it causes pipe to rattle, in your case that surge may be enough to force the fill valve in your toilet to open. Which makes me think your water pressure is too high. My in laws water pressure is so high that just walking by causes their toilets to do that sometimes. My suggestion would be to have a plumber check your water pressure and just check the whole situation out. If your water pressure is too high, he will probably want to install a pressure reducing valve and this will likely eliminate the problem. If it is not too high he may suggest installing water hammer arrestors or air chambers in the line to solve it. This is just one possibility.

water problems

Does the toilet ever do that if no one was using water for a long time?

The toilet itself might have not shut off tightly.

Maybe the toilet tank flapper leaks a little and the water level is always sinking slowly and the shutoff keeps getting loose. Some experts recommend replacing the flapper every so many years rather than use science and analysis to figure out if, when, or how much it leaks.

Would the toilet still do that if you poured extra water into the tank to make the float ride higher and hold the shutoff more tightly? (Takes several tries to prove)

flush the stool and rub your finger around the lip of the flappy,,,where the flappy meets the bottom seal. Now run your finger around on the bottom seal also. You just saved yourself 3 dollars from replacing it needlessly just from gunk deposits. IF its cracked or seal is rough, needs replaced!! should be done ever few months as a preventative . Would save thousands in water bills for customers!!!

Stools are sneaky water wasters. bet the stool is leaking down a bit. shut off its water while your at work, inspect water level, come home and inspect water level,,,if it drops ANY at all, the flapper leaks. The sound may correspond to the regular filling of the tank , if water hammer is doing it,you need an expansion pipe or tank.
