Water main Elbow at House

Hi! We had some type of grey pipe as our water main from the meter to the house when we bought it 2 yrs ago (30 yr old house). Over the last year we have had many leaks. We kept digging up and patching. The last one was under the driveway, so we finally got rid of the gray and replaced it with white PVC. We had to run an elbow from the house at a 90 degree angle then straight down to the water meter. We ran into a small problem. We couldn't get the gray off of the elbow at the copper pipe that runs into the house. We left a small piece of the gray and ran it from there.

Well now it keeps popping off and we don't know how to keep this on. We had a few estimates from the pros and we simply cannot afford any of them.

Any suggestions?
