water leak under ground

How do I locate the direction the water line runs under ground so I can isolate that line and cap it. We did not put the system in.

Please be more specific;
The subject is "water leak". Do you have a leak? Is this your main supply to the house from the utility water main, or something else?

If the main supply, you need to call your water utility. They will send someone to locate the pipe, and shut off the water, then it will probably be your responsibility to get a contractor to repair the pipe.

Unless a locator wire was buried with the pipe, or unless the pipe is metal... the basic answer for a DIY home owner is you don't... without the use of a shovel. And even if the pipe is metal or has a locator wire buried with it, it still takes special equipment to find/follow the wire.

So your best bet is to do a little digging at some known locations where this pipe terminates, and keep in mind that pipes will GENERALLY be laid in a straite line (except to go around obsticals).

Careful if you start digging. You need to have all utility lines marked off before hand. You could have buried electric cables, phone lines, gas, etc, etc.
My state (NJ) requires you to call before you dig.
