Water Heater rusty leak
 

I just noticed my 2 year old water heater has a slow rusty leak coming from behind the pressure relief valve. I called the GE help line and the guy said to remove the valve and put teflon tape on it but but couldn't explain why it was rusty. I'm wondering if there is more of a problem to it than that. I included a picture. I'd really appreciate any help.

May have more to do with your water.
Ever notice rust stains in your toilet or tub?
Is it a steel or glass lined tank?
Do you have old steel supply lines?
Do you have a water softner?

Make sure if you intend on removing the valve and repairing to get a full description of the procedure on this site. If not you may get burnt real bad.

Thanks. I don't have any rust in the tubs or toilets. No water softener and the supply lines are copper. I'm not sure if its steel or glass lined.

Right now the lining is the last thing you should be concerned with just keep it simple and stick with the valve leak worry about everything else later after the leak is repaired. Relax it looks like a minor repair at this time and if it's not you might get a new one under warranty.

there is a slow leak around pop off valve...its rusty because its iron around the opening and its rusting ....follow ge advice ...replace relief valve..double check for leaks...:yes:
