Water heater quit working

I have a 80 gallon electric Whirlpool water heater Model EE3Z80HD055V that will not heat water. This is the model that has the energy control module on top of the WH. The green light is on solid, indicating the unit is working. But it is not.

I have 240 to the unit. I connected a volt meter to the upper element and hit the reset button, the power comes on for about 5 seconds and goes off. I have tested the upper and lower elements, they are about 13 ohms and not shorted to the tank. This unit does not have the typical thermostats but uses temperature sensors that are connected back to the control circuit board.

My thought is the control board is bad. Any other thoughts before I spent $100 on a new control board?

I would be inclined to get two regular thermostats and scrap the crappy electronics.

The WH is about 4 years old.

Not a bad idea on the regular t-stats. The problem is there are no brackets to hold the T-stats ion place next to the tank. Not sure where I could find the brackets.

Edit, just remembered, the access holes for the elements are too small to install regular T-stats. They are round and not much bigger than the screw-in elements.

Update:

Just went to look at something on the WH and the damn thing is working.

I wonder how long this will last????

I agree with you rj - sounds like control board is getting ready to fail. Call the number on the front of heater and have whirlpool overnite you a new one. Should be covered, they are a very reputable company.

A friend of mine had basically the same problem, whirlpool overnighted control board and it has been working good ever since.

RJ, call Whirlpool with the model and serial # tell them the control is bad they will send you a new one and possibly not even want the old one back.

I heard through a good source they do that with that unit. FYI, I have the same one going on 10 years the one thing replaced is the Anode Rod. Knock on wood.

Called Whirlpool and a new control board is on the way. They asked me to return the old board for diagnosis. They are sending me paid return packing label.

Very good customer service.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Glad everything worked out for you rj. My friend said the same thing about their service. My next hwh is going to be a whirlpool.
