water heater leaking
just installed a new G.E. 50 gal. electric water heater. no leaks from piping, water is coming out relief valvem. about a pie plate size puddle sitting on water heater after about 1/2 hour or so. . I have 80 psi. coming in from street, expansion tank is at 60 psi. I have tried to put more air in expansion tank but cant. It says max is 150 psi on expansion tank. . is this my problem? not enough air in expansion tank? or something eles happening?

Yes you need to exceed the working pressure on the house in the tank if it is at 80, either install a pressure reducing valve, or if there is one there, lower the pressure to 50, or pump the tank up to above 80 psi.

can you explain how to get more air in to exapanson tank. I used a electric air compressor and when I go to check pressure, water shoots out of valve and goes drops to 50 psi. Although compressor valve says there is 100lbs psi, I keep maxing out at 50. I cant lower pressure at street, I have a reducing valve there but thats as low as I can get it.

Turn the water off at street. Relieve the pressure on the house, bleed off the expansion tank and recharge it to at least 90 psi, then turn house back on after you know for sure tank is at the desired pressure.

You know to reduce the pressure on the PRV valve you turn it left.

reduce prv left as in counter clockwise?

Ron The Plumber 08-17-2008 04:32 PM

yes counter clockwise

econdave 08-17-2008 04:37 PM

I just about have it turned all the way out and it still reads almost 90psi, is there a stop so the screw doesnt come out?

Ron The Plumber 08-17-2008 04:38 PM

Maybe I'm wrong, does the pressure decrease if you go clockwise?

econdave 08-17-2008 04:50 PM

yes, it was up to 100 maxed out my gauge so I shut down and let opened basement sink. Scared the heck out of me. I pumped up expansion tank to 100 psi, says it can go 150psi max. am watching closely, am I on the right track?

anyone there to help me? please I have been at this since 10:00 a.m.

wire_twister 08-17-2008 05:32 PM

Dave are you sure the gauge is right?

econdave 08-17-2008 05:37 PM

yes, it has always run around 90 psi since it was installed, I use to be on a well>

Back the screw out of the PRV until you can turn it with your fingers, it should not blow out or leak any water. After screw is loose open a faucet and see if you have any water flow, it should flow only a second or two then pressure should go away, and gauge should drop to zero. If this does not occur, if you still have pressure you need to replace PRV.

will do, thanks will let you know what happens'

econdave 08-17-2008 06:30 PM

i did that and pressure dropped and water stopped. the valve says 25-75 psi but I am running around 80 according to gauge. Water tank is not leaking anymore, do I have to put air back in expansion tank? god I hope you are still there.
