Water Heater gas control valve/thermostat loose connection
I have searched all over the internet for an answer to this problem and cannot find anyone with this issue. Hopefully someone here can relate and offer a suggestion or solution.

I have a State Select Power Direct Vent water heater (model# GS6 50 YRPDT 5) with electronic iginition. Here is a link to what I have

I noticed one day that the water was only warm, not hot. I went down to check the water heater temperature setting. As soon as I touched the control the lights on the control came on blink and I hear some clicking and the inginitor lights the burner and the venting unit on top starts to run. (see this link for what the control looks like although to one on this link is not exactly for my model but looks identical).

Then when I touch the control again everything shut off. This time I kind of wiggle the face of the control box and it seems to turn on then off. If I hold the face of the control to one side it works when I let go, eventually it stops working.

Here's what I think..... I am not losing power to the control valve, but I am losing whatever power from the control valve to the gas valve due to a loos connection somewhere.

A replacement gas control valve, I am told will cost me $385 (it is similar to the one I sent a link for but for my specific model, although it looks identical so not sure why I can't use this one). Plus the cost of install.

Is there any way at all that I can trace the loose connection, if indeed that is what you think it is??? I unplugged the wires that have plug sonnections and then plugged them back in, didn't help. I wanted to remove the face of the control box, but it does not come off and says on the front "do not open, nor replaceable parts".

Anybody ever see anything like this? I don't have the $$$ to pay $600+ to replace the whole gas control valve, especially if not necessary.

Any help is appreciated.
