Water Heater Drain pan

It depends. My water heater went out last week and it was just dripping heavily - almost a steady stream. In that case a pan w/ drain pipe could direct the water away from something you don't want to get wet. Of course it won't help in all failure scenarios but I suppose some is better than none? By the way, I'm not a licensed plumber.
