That is a glass vial air door support that will shatter when firebox overheats.
Most likely your air intake ports clogged enough to reduce air inflow and firebox overheated causing the glass vial to shatter closing off the air door.

Clean the air intake screen and/or filter then obtain a replacement glass vial from manufacturer and install it correctly (to prop open the air doors). You can then relight water heater and hope for best.
Not a good scenario!

Regards,

RR

Hard to tell from photo but looks like part of the spiral heat exchanger to me.

Hkstroud,

Thank you for replying. I have taken more photos, if it helps. It fell down from the center tube/vent in the middle of the heater. It was lying right on top of the burner. If indeed its the heat exchanger, is it safe to clean up the crumbles and attempt to light the pilot?

Rooster,
Thanks for replying. I took the part out. It looks spirally and looks like corroded metal. Its falling off into peices in my hand. I also see crumbles on the heater floor. It looks like it fell from the center tube /space in the middle of the heater. Please find attached another photo

Thank you

Yes, but replace the heat exchanger as soon as you can. Remove flue pipe, then draft air inlet. Lift out old spiral heat exchanger and drop in new one.

I was answering according to your first photo.
Do clean the air intake ports and/or filter while you are messing with the heater.
Your other photos clearly show the spiral heat ribbon. Not near the catastrophe as a failed air door glass vial.

Have a good one!

Amazing how difficult it is to tell what something is from photo when you have no depth perception isn't it.

If the WH is more than 6- 7 years old, replace it.

Re: Water heater any one knows this part

I never replaced a spiral heat exchanger, but, before deciding on that, make sure you have enough room above the water heater to be able to install it.
