water hammer arrestors

Can water hammer arrestors be installed upside down? I am installing a new outlet box for the washing machine. I will be running pex tubing from the top down so it will connect at the top of the outlet box. The directions seem to indicate that the box can be installed any direction. I am not even sure I need the hammer arrestors because it is pex tubing and from what I understand it doesn't have the water hammer issues copper has. Any thoughts.
