Water filters

I have a large carbon filter system hooked up and there seems to be two types of filters that fit it. One where there are holes at both ends , and one that only has and inlet , with the bottom being blocked. Is there any difference , as to which one i would/should use.

No way to tell without a picture.
Most often the indent on the bottom is to just hold the filter in place. There is no water flow through the bottom just the sides.

The one with the hole running from one end to the other is solid carbon block while the other is loss carbon in the housing.
Which one is in the housing that you are replacing?
Also depends on what you are removing from the water and the flow rate that you have for the system in question.
