Washer stuck in fitting

I need to replace a washer to a valve stem in bathtub. No water comes out when the faucet is turned on. When I removed the valve stem I discovered that the bottom screw (used to hold the washer on) and the washer had come off the valve stem and are stuck in the fitting.

Any ideas how to remove them? I tried a screwdriver.

Pair of needle nose plier, cut up the washer with a utility knife(don't nick the seat), turn on the water...........all or either should work.

There is actually a tool for this. It's called a gasket pick. But Just Bill's suggestion should work.

I have actually done this with a piece of clothes hanger wire. Use a pair of pliers to bend a short hook on the end of the wire, file or somehow make a sharp point on the end of the hook. Insert the wire into the cavity where the stem goes, try hooking the sharp point into the old washer to pull it out. OR- try to hook the end at the outer edge of the washer if you have room for this. Another way is to use the coat hanger wire without the hook. Again file a sharp point on the end, try to pierce the old washer for removal. If successful--pay yourself on the back.

Thank you

Thanks for all the ideas. I ended up removing the valve stem leaving the stuck washer behind. I then turned the water on and the water pressure blew the washer out. I had someone stationed at the water shut off valve so not that big a mess to clean up.

I first tried a gasket pick but washer was really stuck in the fitting.

if all else fails you can get a seat wrench and remove the seat then the hole should be large enough for the washer and screw to be flushed out.
