walkup basement drain

I have a little water in the drain pipe for the walkup basement drain. is that normal or is the pipe clogged? the drain is at the bottom of the steps from basement door up to ground level. should I snake it?

There is a P-trap at that drain--so some water will always be there (or should be to keep sewer gas from escaping)

Run some water down that drain--if it flows nicely and the water level in the pipe returns to the same level--you are fine--

one more question. the house is 5 years old. do you think the drain goes to the sump or goes to a french drain?

Typically it will have its own pipe right to the pit---but not always--

The P-traps will dry out during long periods of no rain--
