Vertical Drop

Background Information
- New Build (2011)
- Ottawa/ON - Canada

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out whether or not there is a code regarding noise or maximum vertical drop of water drain. I noticed a loud noise coming from the water drain pipes in the basement when the water is being used elsewhere in the house. Almost sounds like the water is coming down in a free fall until it impacts the horizontal section of the pipe and makes a splashing noise.

Anyone experience this ? Is this to code?

Vertical Drop

Not really any code restrictions on height for a typical house. Plastic can be load though

Vertical Drop

Hi George,

There are no Cdn plumbing code regulations regarding the level of noise a water line or drain line makes. You can hear water draining through the pipe if it's marked SCH 40 (most common wall thickness of ABS used in drainage lines that I'm familiar with). You could try to upgrade to SCH 80 if the noise is too aggravating, but my drains are SCH 40 and in the crawl space, and unless I'm working nearby, I don't hear them.
