Venting question

Can a vent run vertically in an outside wall? It is a small two story house in rural alberta and the owner is strapped for space. I understand about the water lines being inside (for freezing issues) but not sure about a 3" or 4" vent stack.
Thanks

Best not to but I've done it. You'll lose insulation in the stud cavity.
