vent stack for kitchen sink
4 Attachment(s)
my kitchen is going through complete reno (to be documented on this website in "my project" area in the future).

my kitchen sink needs a vent. it will be a large farmer sink type also with a dishwasher. nothing else will be draining on this line when i'm done the reno.

above my kitchen is an attic and then the roof as it is just one story. if i bring the vent up on the inside of the wall as shown, then i could just bust through the 2x2 wooden top plate and entre the attic. then come back towards the kitchen a bit and then straight up to the roof (don't want the vent right near the edge of the roof!).

but i am concerned that i will weaken the integrity of the wall/roof joint because the vent will cut entirely separate the 2x2 top plate on the wall (see circled area).

on the other hand, i could just install an AAV type vent... would be easy.. what do you think?

aav would be the way to go most codes allow them or will have provisions for alt. plumbing designs. we use them all the time. no problems when they are installed right.

code would require aav to be isntalled above water overflow line. but my sink don't have one. so aav would need to be above the sink.

that means it would be in the wall with an access port.

but that wall is exterior, so is maybe freezing temp. so also not code.

ho hum... looks like ceiling vent is the way to go for me.

can you address some of my original question/concerns?

Maybe I'm not seeing things correctly, but that doesn't look like a 2x2 top plate to me. If it is then there's no way its a load bearing wall and you're going to have a bit of a tough time even with an 1-1/2" vent as the hubs on 1-1/2" fittings aren't likely to fit inside the wall.

correction, it is 2 x 2x4 stacked one on top the other.
