Using Jet pump and well for sprinklers?

The house we bought has a jet pump attached to a shallow well in the garage. I primed the pump and it works. It seems as if the water tank was removed at some point in the past.

My question is can I hook up some type of irrigation system straight to the pump without buying a new pressure tank. Then I just put a timer on the switch that goes to the pump.

Seems as if pressure tanks are several hundred bucks. Thus not really worth it for a project to save water.

I think you will burn up the pump in short order---get a regulator and pressure tank or pay the water bill---

I would look at the tag on it, to see if it is marked "continuous duty", "rating: cont", or whatever, and if not labeled such, check the manufacturer's website, or call them, to find out the rating on it. Otherwise, what Mike said, which is more likely the case.

Whether it works will also depend on the pumps GPH and the sprinkler heads requirements. If you try to run too many heads the pump won't be able to supply enough water.

It's a montgomery ward high capacity jet pump, 1/2 hp.
It has a stamp that says "cont 400" How do I interpret that rating?
thanks

The interpretation is that it would be fine for normal household use, occasional car washing and similar short burst now and then uses just as it was intended to satisfy when first installed (ie: before the house got converted to city water).

For irrigation purposes you would need a MUCH larger pump which still requires assuming the well can produce enough water (10GPH minimum) to make the install and other expenses worthwhile.

To get this requires a bottom of the (300 foot?) well pump.

Unless you're lucky enough to have a hill on your property where you can install a VERY large water tank that this or some other pump can work to fill... you're not gonna be able to irrigate much with what you have.

I just went through this with my own old shallow well.
