upflushing toilet

Can't speak for CA (California, Canada?), but I used a Saniflo brand macerating toilet in my home (in Pennsylvania, USA), and it works great.

looked at the "where to buy" section of saniflo's US website (http://www.saniflo.com/) - there are a bunch of distributers/retailers in San Francisco, so I'm assuming that means they are legal in the state of california. There is also a candian version of the saniflow website at http://www.saniflo.ca/, so I'm guessing you'll be good either place, as long as its installed correctly.
