Default Tub Spout Gap??!? Please help.

We recently purchased a house that needs some "fixing up". We replaced the shower head and my boyfriend said the pressure was low and he thought it was because the pull on the tub spout wouldn't lock into place and stop all the water from coming out of the spout. Went to the store and bought a universal spout but there is a half inch gap between the tub wall and the spout. Why??!? Is it that this part is not universal, or are we supposed to remove some of the peices? It looks like we could remove the brass nut but then we have no way to screw it in. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I could use the help! Thanks!

Is it a thread on style spout or does it slide on to a copper tube? If the latter you may need to trim a bit of the copper off. If its a thread on style you may need a different sized 'nipple' behind it.

Yes, it seems to be just tubing that you slide it onto, no threads. It's ok to just trim some of the pipe off, and we won't cause any trouble? Thanks!

Yes, just trim of the amount needed to let the spout go to the wall. Make sure there are no sharp edges on the pipe because there are rubber "O" rings that make the seal to prevent the water from leaking back to the wall.

Right, use a tubing cutter.
Here is the first one I found via google

Your home cent will have a cheaper one for about $5 that will do the job. Or, just get a longer spout.

Do they make more than one kind of "universal" spout then? The one I purchased was the only one I could find. Thanks!

There are lots of spouts that fit 1/2" copper stub outs.

I recently installed this one from Kohler.

The rough-in guide says the 1/2" copper should be 2 1/2" min and 3 1/2" max out from finished wall. Comes in various finishes. This one is "universal" in that it works with 5/8"OD copper (1/2" copper), which is what you apparently have and also 1/2"NPT (pipe thread).
