Tub spout connection question

Hi, I am doing some remodeling on my tub and when I removed the spout I noticed the threads for the connection are rusted and crumble to the touch.

I suppose it was cast iron? The rest of the pipe looks like cast iron also.

To repair this will the rusted part come out and can I just screw in a new one?

You will have to open up the wall and remove the damaged one and replace with new. Please supply a better picture.

Epson, here are some better pictures. I'm not real familiar with older plumbing hardware so I wasn't sure if it was possible to put a new end into this pipe. The pipe itself looks ok, just the end is rusted

That is just a short length of galvanized steel pipe--threaded into an elbow behind the wall---

You might be able to unscrew the old nipple (short pipe) However if it crushes you will need to open the wall even more and keep trying until you find one that unscrews---

Replacing the old mixer valve and any old piping behind the walls is customary if you are redoing the walls.

There really isnít any easy way to do this but open up the wall and see what you have to deal with.

May be time to get rid of all of that old steel pipe.
At some point it's all going to leak and close off on the inside 100% of the time.

If you just want to remove that close nipple,an internal pipe extractor should work.

Thanks I'm going to try that extractor tool.

The existing cast iron appears to be in good shape and I'm not going to be demoing the mid wall since its in good shape and isn't that old.

I have a closet behind the tub where I can get to the plumbing if it ever needs servicing so I was hoping to just replace that nipple.

Yikes! Bad news the fitting threads are rusted too. I'll be cutting that whole section of the mud wall out now, or maybe going in from the closet to replace all that hardware

I told you....
