tub shower not draining fast enough....

I have 2 bathrooms in my house/and when someone takes a shower in the one bathroom/water backs up into the second tub shower and toilet bubbles and girgles...have had plumber out/says we need a new leach field and the cost for that is $3500...Does that sound true?

That might well be the case---have you had the septic tank pumped and inspected yet?

Exatly what did he do while he was there to come up with that idea?
(not saying he's wrong)
Any of the sinks or toilets been making guggling noises, or running slow?
How long has it been since the tank was pumped?
As there pumping it out they should be able to see water running back into the tank from the leach field if it's failed.

Could be lots of other things, a simple blockage in the lines, collaped D box cover, D box plugged up, collaped line, roots in one of the lines.
All things I've seen before.

Do you have a Basement with a laundry sink, and does that back up when both showers are running? As Joe said, the guy might know your system, and know exactly what is going on. On the other hand, determination of what he said takes some pretty extensive evaluation.

Seems a bit of a stretch to automatically assume the leach field is bad. As joecaption said, could be a number of other things that would cost a whole lot less to fix. The couple of blockages I've had over the years were both from tree roots.

Hard to say if $3500 is a reasonable price. Depends on soil conditions, how many laterals are required and how long they have to be, etc. It's about what I paid for my septic system when I built my house four years ago, but we are in the Chesapeake Bay watershed so septic requirements here are quite strict. There are a number of vacant lots around here that were platted years ago and now can't be built on because they're too small for today's septic requirements.

pumping the tank out is only a temporary fix. the tank will fill up within 2 weeks and in normal operation stays full. it could be what he says but i would definitely get another opinion.
