tub/shower drain conversion to shower

Is it OK to remove the overflow drain and cap off the vertical leg of the drain T where the overflow pipe connected with a slip nut?. Would there be any concerns of trapping sewer gas in this short 3" leg of the T?. Presumably there is a trap installed underneath the T.

My intention is to conver at cement walled rectangular built-in-place tub to a showeer stall use only. I'm also lowering the threshold to about 8" from the original height which was to bathtub levels.
