Tub overflow drain?

I needed to replace my tub water stopper, so I found a kit which included a matching overflow drain. So I removed my old overflow drain and I noticed there is no seal between the tub. Should there be some sort of seal between the tub and the overflow drain itself? it seems as the water would just flow to the underside of the tub and rot out the wood. (thinking this I went under the house to check it out and all looks solid)

Thanks

Tub overflow drain?

Yes, there should be a gasket installed on the outside of the tub that is held in place by the inside overflow cover. I use a small amount of flux to hold the gasket in place while installing the cover to prevent it from falling down.
