Tub Leaking

My tub is leaking into my finished basement.
I have pulled out all of the old caulk and am getting ready to put in the new stuff.
I was reading some older posts and some people had pointed out that the leak could also be comming from the part of the drain that screws down from inside the tub. They rec. to unscrew this drain, pull out the old plumbers putty and put in new.
My only concern is if i unscew this drain completely, will the drain assembly disconnect from the tub?
It is almost impossible to access this from below and I have no idea how I would reconnect.
I think this may be the source of my leak because, in a hurry, last week i had a slow moving drain in the tub, I put some drain cleaner in - not noticing that it was very thick ( stores to cold) the drain cleaner had time to stay above the drain for a while.
Could drain cleaner damage the putty?

Thanks for reading!

Tub Leaking

The ceiling below this must be damaged for you to notice that it was leaking.

Cut an access hole in the basement ceiling, repair the tub drain and then repair the drywall ceiling.

Before you change the drain, unscrew the overflow cover and check the gasket. Many times I have found that to be a source of leaks. But as per Redline, a hole in the basement will give you the whole picture.
