tub gasket ID too small, can I cut it?

The gasket under the tub, between the tub and the drain. i would like to replace it since i am there and it is old. but it is a difficult size and one at the store is close at ID a bit off OD but not sure if OD is that important. If I trim the hole a bit do you think it will be a problem? Certainly I will not cut smooth and perfectly round. I think I would keep it a just a wee bit small but big enough the drain will fit in.

If the drain ends below the gasket I think it should be ok, If it is still above the gasket then not sure. Anyone know? or got an idea?

It is a 2 inch drain, I have already been through a lot just finding a replacement drain and should have got a gasket then if I could but did not. yes it is a 2 inch tub drain.

The gasket works under compression--so an imperfect hole should not matter---I say go for it.
