Tub drain overflow installation problem

Hi all,
I am trying to install the overflow mouth piece into my free standing tub and I discover that it does not fit. Please see the pictures to give me idea of how to solve this problem?

As you can see the opening from picture 1 and 2. In picture 3, I installed the overflow piece w/o the drain pipe and it is way inside to screw the pipe in.
Thank you for your help.

I've never once seen a recessed area like that for a tub spout.

I bought it from Signature Hardware. The drain pipe is also from them specifically for the tub!!! It look like I have to deal with them on this issue.

Do you know if there is an extention or adapter or replacement that extend out 1" more?

good luck dealing with signature. in the past i have done work for a designer who loves their stuff and always likes to order it himself including all the hardware they say is needed. with out consulting me. so when it gets to the job and does not work i get to deal with them and have never had good luck and usually end up ordering other parts or making or modifying parts to finish project.
