Trouble removing T&P Valve from water heater

A friend's T&P Valve is leaking, no increase in temp or pressure so he wants to try to replace the valve. Trouble is getting the old one off. Any tricks? There doesn't appear to be a locknut or anything preventing it from turning.

Also - what is the proper type of pipe to hook up to the output of the valve to a drain/bucket? Regular PVC ok or do I need to use CPVC?

Does CPVC use the same primer/glue as regular PVC?

Thanks.

Get a bigger pipe wrench. They are just threaded in.

I would use copper but CPVC is acceptable in most jurisdictions. PVC is not. There is a special primer and cement for CPVC or use can use the multipurpose stuff.

Trouble removing T&P Valve from water heater

Just by a piece of black pipe threaded and screw it into the TP Valve.

Make sure it goes all the way down to the floor.

The TP valve is on top, so there will have to be an elbow to make it go towards the floor.
