Question

tool for fitting radiator union elbow

the nipple on a union elbow is really short and therefore has 2 diametrically opposed notches inside for fitting. i was wondering if that is done with a nipple extractor or a different kind of tool.

thanks

A standard nipple extractor, or pipe extractor will not work in this application. There is a tool made just for this, and also a tool made for installing "special" tail pieces for a restroom urinal which has these opposing tabs made within the nipple. BUT-- I have had good luck using a standard metal file which just slips into the nipple. Use an adjustable (crescent) wrench on the file for torgue, being careful not to break the file.
