toilet water running in 2nd floor drainpipe

I can hear water running in the drainpipe from 2nd floor bathroom (the drainpipe runs down the wall of a 1st floor utility closet). It sounds like just a trickle but it runs all the time. I'm assuming it's toilet water since it runs even when sink and tub are not in use.

I'd appreciate any tips on how to fix this - I assume there shouldn't be any water running, is that right?

I also wonder if I have the same problem with my 1st floor toilet but I can't access the drain pipe to hear.

Thank you!

are you sure there are no dripping faucets up there?
i would guess toilet flapper not sealing or ballcock not shutting off and water going down overflow inside the tank.

Thanks DannyT.

Nope, no leaking faucets.

Any easy way to test if the toilet flapper is not sealing or if the ballcock is not shutting off? Do I need to drain the tank water to check?

Thanks for your help!

Simple test but some red food coloring (any color will work, just red shows up better) In the tank, do not flush, if it shows up in the bowl the flapper is leaking.
Shut the water off and flush the toilet, lift the flapper and see if the seat is nice and smooth, if it's not use some sand paper to clean it off, If the flappers in question just replace it. There's lots of differant styles, so take a look at it and replace with the same style.
