Default toilet venting problems

My house is approximately 16 years old and I am having problems with the flushing on the 2nd story. When I flush either of the 2 flushes on the 2nd floor, they flush okay but they then pull air from the tub or sink drains. This causes odors to come through these traps. I have been in the attic and know the vent pipes are connected and I have run a hose from the vent exit on the roof and there doesn't seem to be any blockages.

Any ideas why the flushes are pulling air from the drains.

I wonder if it was ever vented then.

That's what I think. Is there any thing that can be done now to help or are there any type of flushes that are better than others for these problems.

my next question would be can you be sure that the Lav sinks and the tub is vented? If so try and check to see if those vents are open. because If the are vented then it should pull air from their vent and not their traps.

The venting is covered in insulation. I know that there is a vent pipe going to both bathrooms as I could follow them under the insulation

Do both vents that you followed connect and then go through the roof or do both vents each go through the roof

Sometime the pipes are connected in the attic ( Manifold connection) and then go through the roof. A bird or squirrel could have gone down the pipe and blocked the vent

Actually they connect in the attic and go out in one pipe.

I took a hose and run it in the vent on the roof to make sure there were no blockages and the water ran through no problem

Sure but if one is blocked and one isn't where do you think the water went

Down the one that isn't blocked.

Still doesn't prove you don't have blocked vent

What you are going to need to do is seperate the vents in the attic and snake each vent

Good point. I think I will get a plumber to come and look at.

I hope that it is a simple blockage but I suspect it is a problem of them not being vented.

My problem is that the original plumber I had was who John Wayne had in mind when he made your attached quote.

Thanks for your feedback
