Per the IRC code, the water closet's centerline must be at least 15" off of the finished wall, or in this case, the tub.

What kind of holes are you wanting to drill in the tub? What are they for?

the holes are for the water handles. there are two holes already, one for the drain and overflow, but i need holes for the water shut handles and for the spout.

the tub is a one piece tub shower surround. i thought the closet's centerline should be 12'' from the finished wall?

15" is code. Think about sitting in a two foot box, it's not the most comfortable spot. If you are a real big guy you may end up not even making it into that space.

12" to the back of the tank and 15" from both sides and the front.
