Toilet on tile or tile around toilet?

Hey everyone,

Redid my bathroom floor, the flange of the toilet (cast iron i think) I was only able to wiggle high enough for it to sit on top of the hardiback. The tile will then go on top of the hardiback.. So my question is do I put the tile on first which will create a quarter inch gap from the flange or install the toilet and tile around it?

In essence, can the wax ring account for the gap between the flange and the actual toilet?

Yes it can, all finshed flooring always go under the toilet.

Toilet on tile or tile around toilet?

Ok thanks, I was just confused because in all photots and videos I see the round metal/plastic ring (flange?) goes then on top of the tile as well?

Do it the #1 way as the diagram below depicts. Bottom of the closet flange rests on the finished floor.

I vote for:

Bottom of the closet flange rests on the finished floor.

Screw that flange to your backer board---then tile around it---when the time comes to set the toilet---use a wax extender ring and the extra long bolts that come with it---if the flange is to deep for that---a second ,all wax ring could be used or a plastic flange extender---

That works well----

There is a never ending debate over this question----after you have set a couple hundred toilets--you will develop a preferred method---

I like the tile around the flange---Both methods work---

as long as you don't use a 3" inside mounted flange --or a thick PVC flange or have an Italian toilet---then that flange better be tiled in or the flange may well hit the bottom of the toilet.
