Toilet tank leans against the wall, leaks

The other day, I noticed that the my toilet tank is now leaning against the wall and there's a good size chip in the back of the bowl underneath the tank.

There are two slight leaks or drips now coming from the two long screws under the tank.

Part of the problem seems to be that whoever installed the toilet has it too far from the wall. Normally, the tank is about two inches away.

For an emergency fix, I took a large towel and folded it between the wall and the tank to keep it upright, but are there any more elaborate quick fixes?

I rent and I really don't want to spend the money for a whole new toilet, and if I tell my landlord about it he just might end up charging me for it and that could cost me even more money.

Thanks for any advice,
Matt

If it was faulty and breaking....your landlord should be paying for it.

Is the piece that chipped off still there (possibly in fragments from having fallen down to the floor)? Check it for glue that may give away a preexisting repair.

Toilet tanks nowadays are not fastened to the wall. (More than 50 years ago some were)) Even one that is closer to the wall can break or break the bowl if pushed on abnormally.

It will probably be deemed your fault, especially if the place has been rented in the past. Sounds like a toilet with an improper "rough-in" measurement was used. Measure from the wall to the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. This measurement should be 10", 12" or 14". These are the 3 most common rough-in measurements. Sounds like someone leaned back, hard, against the tank.
