Toilet Seat

This question seems easy to answer, but I cant get it right.

The toilet seat is loose on the toilet. I pop the cap up, try to tighten it with a screwdriver, and nothing.

Am I missing something?

That nut on the bottom may be cracked or the bolt has broken. I would just replace the whole thing. It is such a minor expense it is not worth messing around with making an old one work beyond an attempt or two at tightening.
