toilet seal, wax or foam rubber

I am putting a toilet in my basement that has the rough in plunbing. The problem is they did not install a flange and cemented right to the top of the drain. In order to save me some chipping concrete work I thought I would install a flange that goes inside the drain rather than over it. The plumber at Home Depot told me I could not use a wax seal but had to use the rubber one. I installed it using the rubber one get a leak at the seal. Why can and I not use a wax seal? I would think that once it gets forced down it would seal much better. Any comments. And as always thanks in advance. The help here is awesome.

Did you actually install the flange? I hope so.
I always use wax rings on floor mounted toilets and foam for wall hung toilets

Yes I installed the flange. Think I might have cracked it tho. Just wondered why the plumber would tell me to not use wax when using an inside fitting flange. Thanks.

At HD you talked to a salesman not a plumber

I agree with Eplumber. HD does hire one person that is actually a Plumber, but the rest of them are shelf stockers with little to no knowledge.

Thanks guys. I did buy a wax seal and reinstalled the toilet. Looks like all is well, no leaks so far. Thanks for your help.
