toilet problems

please help my toilet doesn't flush properly (it's hit and miss). I've tried plunging (an immediate fix) and I've tried a septic treatment (didn't do anything). When the toilet flushes, the tank empties but nothing goes down. Any advice or other ideas that I can do?

Thanks!

sounds like the toilet has an obstruction---Get your self a toilet auger and see if that will clear the j bend---
If that doesn't do it---the toilet will need to be pulled and the main line rodded or the toilet checked to see if there is something stuck in the j-bend.

toilet problems

the jet hole in the bottom could be blocked or closed off .try flushing with a bucket like ben suggested. i have found the caps from toilet bowl cleaners that hang in the tank come off and get inside the bowl and block the jet hole in the bottom of the bowl. would flush sometimes and other times wouldn't. had the guys on new construction forget to take the bolt covers out of the tank and flushed them down inside the bowl also. if it flushes with a bucket of water then something is obstructing the water between the tank and the bowl.

toilet problems

Thank you for all the help. I was able to use an auger to clear the J pipe. Toilet flushes way better now. But, now I'm noticing that the water in the tank fills slowly. Would this mean I have to change the fill valve?
