Toilet Flushing Causes Noisy Cold Water Pipes

I have two toilets in two separate bathrooms. When I flush either of them the cold water pipes, especially in the basement, make a loud banging noise when the the toilet tanks are refilling. I can run cold water from any of the faucets in the house with only a slight noise problem. I assume that the main cold water pipe running to either batroom is common to both the toilet and the sink. Any suggestions as to the noise problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like water hammer. They have devices called "water hammer arrestors" that might help. You might be able to get away with turning down the flow in to toliet for a temporary fix as well. Less flow going through the pipe should result in less of a hammer affect when the valve closes suddenly.

Yeah - water hammer studs are nice, get some . . . installation is minimal.

Some indepth info:

After installing that, if it doesn't cure the entire problem, then I'd run along the pipelines and replace supports - water hammer is exaggerated when the pipe aren't secured and they have more room to clack around.

Thanks for your comment. I'll give it a try on anything I can get at.
