Toilet flush valve

Hi guys,

I just bought a new flush valve for my toilet and have a question about the rubber gasket that sits directly between the bottom of the tank and the top of the bowl.

Basically, should i use caulking between the gasket and the bowl or will it do the job without?
There was a ton of caulking on the old one but the instructions on the new valve don;t mention anything about caulking.

If i'm supposed to caulk, any suggestions on removing the old caulking to get a clean surface? i cut off as much of it as i could but the silicone residue isn;t coming off with my elbow grease

Thanks guys.

No sealent is needed.
Use a single edged razor blade.

I used a sealant called Block. It's blue and you brush it on.

I also heard you don't need a sealant. A retired plumber told me about it. I figured it couldn't hurt.
