Toilet Flange ontop of or level with tile?

I'm getting ready to tile my bathroom. Should I put the flange in now level with the mud then tile around it? Or should I put the tile down then install the flange ontop of the tile?

Also, this is the flange I have is this any good or should I use something else? I figure a cement in one will probably hold up much better then one of those twist in ones?

The toilet flange should be on top of the finished floor.

I agree that it should be on top the tile. Don't forget that the flange has to be secured to the floor. Get a good masonary bit to drill the tile without cracking them. Since it is likely that you will have a tile saw handy, you may be able to trim the tile (cut notches) so the flange mounting holes are open and not need to drill. A small notch would still give plenty of stability for the flange and negate the possiblity of cracking when drilling.

Yes... good advice. Make sure you secure it the floor well.

Something else to chew on; lots of people are buying porcelain over standard cermamic these days, as I did in my bath. When you try to drill into that stuff, be sure you buy a specialty diamond bit from a tile supply. Depending on what grade you get, it can be very very hard. The big boxes sell carb bits and masonry bits but the porcelain will laugh at them.

Use stanlees steel screws or all brass screws only to secure flange to floor.
