toilet flange

I'm tearing up the 1/4 inch lauan and linoleum in a small bathroom. I want to put Harris backer and tile in, do I have to take out the toilet flange (currently an outside of the drain flange) or can I keep it, hardibacker and tile then do an inside drain flange ontop or keep the original flange and use spacers and wax rings to compensate? Thanks in advance!

you can leave it. you may need a thicker wax ring when you set the toilet. i used to use 2 thin ones before they made the thicker ones.
