In this toilet when you flush it the water rises nearly to the top, then goes back to normal. After a couple of hours the water sinks down to where it barely covers the hole at the bottom, as you can see in the picture?

Has anyone experienced this problem? I suspect there is a leak in the pipe at the U bend underneath the toilet, and the toilet valve is too old to respond to this tiny leak. Is this an expensive fix?

The water in the bowl should not "leak out" as there is a built in trap in the base of the toilet. I would suspect some sort of venting problem that is creating a negative pressure beyond the toilet and siphoning the water back out. Is this a recent occurance? Has there been any plumbing work done on the house lately?

I do not know how long this problem has existed. There has been much plumbing work done on this house, since it is such an old one. Many drain pipes have been replaced. What type of repair could cause such an odd problem?

I was wondering whether the trap itself could leak?

Perhaps it is not a critical problem, better left alone?

Unless the toilet trap itself is cracked or has a factory default allowing it to leak, this is normally caused by a partially clogged vent stack pipe, as troubleseeker advised.
Go up on the roof (carefully) to inspect the vent stack pipe above this toilet. Clean out any birdnest, leaves, debris, etc. that you can reach by hand, and then flush the stack down with a water hose sprayer. If it is badly clogged, you may have to haul a heavy-duty rented plumber's snake up there to snake the stack down from top to bottom first before flushing.
