toilet base leak

Our toilet is leaking around the base. When I took the lid off the tank, I noticed a white ring floating around loose. Is that what is causing our leak, and how do we fix it?

If the leak is from the base around the bowl in the floor, than you are probably looking at a defective wax ring. Did you recently drive a snake down the toilet?

or,you can do what I did to fix a leak around the base:
let the bathroom warm up nice and toasty (softens the wax),loosen the nuts on the base,"wiggle" the bowl a few times then re-tighten the nuts. (but not too much)

tnx,

Very very bad idea to even try doing it like that.
Uneven heat could crack the base, A leaking ring is about a $3.00 fix to do right, left to leak and it can cost you thousands of dollars to redo the flooring and fix the floor joist.
