Tips on setting a toilet

Are there any secret tips on setting a toilet? My girlfriend and I tried to set mine and it was hard for her to line the bolts up with the holes while I was lowering it down. I have set a toilet before and it worked fine, but this one seems to be giving me problems. Also the wax ring kept falling off before I got it in place. Can you set the wax ring in the hole, then lower the toilet down?

Use extra nuts or old wax ring pieces to hold the two toilet bolts upright in place. Put the new wax ring on the flange.
Straddle the flange with the toilet in hand and lower it straight down with the bolts sticking up through the toilet base holes.
Sit or stand on the toilet to wiggle it down to set it. Then snug the toilet bolt nuts down. Do not over-tighten as you can crack the porcelain toilet base.
Good Luck!

Put a straw over the bolts and lower the toilet, the straws will help you line things up much easier.

Heard of the straw trick before, but never used it. If you're having a problem, try it.

I always place the wax seal on the flange. make sure the bolts are centered on the sides of the flange and pinch a bit of the wax seal onto them to hold straight up. Many new wax seals include a plastic clip to hold the bolts upright while setting the toilet. Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Packing extra wax in to hold the bolts in place worked great. The straw trick also worked like a charm! I set the toilet by myself in about 5 min. Thanks again everyone.
