Time to replace hot water tank - options

My home has a hot water tank. It is connected to my home heating furnace/boiler (oil). Since the tank has been corroding and showing signs of leaking, my plumber suggested I replace it.

He said my options are
- replace the hot water tank
- get an electric water heater
- run the water through my existing furnace/boiler

He says that running the water through my furnace is the common way to do it. He seemed a little surprised that I even had a hot water tank.

Do any of you have any suggestions? How do I make the decision. The most expensive option seems to be replacing the hot water tank with a new one.

Thanks in advance.
Norm

Option 3 still requires a tank and a heat exchanger. SO go with option 1 and call a different plumber.

If I understand you your hot water comes from your heater which is called a summer winter hookup.

I would just install an electric water heater and cap off the domestic lines at the heater.

Depending where you live you usually can shut off your main heater several months a year saving mucho oil.

Always get several quotes before a major expenditure.
