Is there a technique to rodding?

I tried a manual snake, and it gets stuck about a foot in, I think on a lip or something, when I have the plumbers out with their rodding machine, that goes through no problem, it seems that one, swings the cable around to it gets over the lip.

I also tried on you attach to a drill and that was worthless.

Is it worth it do spend $400 for one of the rodding machines?

Is there any technique to using one? I am just worried about forking over the $400 and the have the cable get stuck on the lip again.

It is part of the interior drain tiles, not sure there is an easy way to fix that.

You didn't say if it was a main line or those in the wall that you were trying to enter from. In either case, I would check out the Rental places. You can rent a motorized unit for lots less than buying. You won't have it taking up space once you are done either.
