Is there a PVC "baffle" ??
 

Hi Folks ... my gray line connects to the septic outflow pipe and then into the drain field. I would like to leave this line open, but sewer gas comes up the pipe and into the RV. Do they make a 4 inch PVC "baffle" that would allow the flow of gray water in one direction, while preventing the upflow of gas in the other ???

I don't see how that could be happening. Your sinks should have p-traps, so sewer gas couldn't be coming up through the drain lines.

I lived in my RV for over two years while building my own house, and never had such a problem. How is the drain connected to the outflow pipe? If it's just stuck into a cleanout, gas can escape that way.

thanks for your response. It may be coming up thru the shower floor drain. Let me open the gate, shut down the a/c and try to identify where the smell is coming from.

The shower drain should also have a p-trap. Maybe, if you don't use the shower much, there's no water in it.

This is most strange. I shut off the a/c and opened the Gray gate. Within 5 minutes you could smell sewer gas in the RV. I put my face into both sinks as well as the shower enclosure and could smell nothing. Shower and sinks were fine ... so where else could this be coming from ??

And I am assuming they don't make a 4" PVC baffle ... ??

No, and if they did, it wouldn't solve your problem. I still think what you are smelling is coming up through where you have the drain connected to the sewer outflow pipe. You didn't answer my earlier question: how is it connected? If it's flex hose just stuck into a cleanout, your are going to smell sewer every time you dump. That's why many campgrounds require a special fitting and/or a rubber "doughnut."

My connection is the expandable hose that came with my unit ... it is twisted/locked into a red 90 degree piece of PVC which is screwed down into a female 4 inch white PVC line that connects with a "Y" into the output leg of the septic ... there is a cleanout, but it is some 25 feet down that line.
